Microsurgery
What is Microsurgery?
Microsurgery is the art of performing delicate intricate surgical interventions using microscopic magnification. In practice, this involves the ‘joining up’ of tiny blood or lymphatic vessels that can often be smaller than a hair breadth in diameter.
The practice of this complex discipline requires years of training and a steady hand. The practical applications of this niche subspecialty includes but is not limited to the:
- Reattachment of severed digits and limbs
- Reconstruction of body parts after cancer or trauma surgery
- Treatment of lymphoedema
In addition it is a pre-requisite skill set to have when operating on tiny nerve structures. The power of microsurgery cannot be underestimated in its ability to restore form and function to the human body.
Dr Parviz was the Clinical Director for Plastic Surgery at the Royal London Hospital, the UK’s largest trauma centre.
