AKA Stump Revision

(Above Knee Amputation Stump Revision)

Reasons For AKA Stump Revision

Above The Knee Amputation often occurs as the result of severe trauma to the leg, and patients generally are not in a condition to decide when or how the amputation occurs. The remaining limb may not be perfectly suited to a prosthesis. This in turn may mean additional surgeries to create a residual limb that allows them to wear a prosthesis with a degree of comfort.

There are a number of reasons why a patient may wish to undergo stump revision surgery including:

- Excess soft tissue or awkwardly shaped residual limbs that interferes with fitting of a prosthesis
- Tight painful scars
- Dimpled scars prone to collecting skin debris and dirt
- Painful areas in the residual limb
- Bony prominences which chafe and rub in a prosthetic socket
- Repeated infections (folliculitis - infections related to hair follicles)
