Complex Hernia Repair
Complex Hernia Repair With Abdominal Reconstruction
For small common hernias such as umbilical or inguinal hernias, laparoscopic surgery can normally be performed on an outpatient basis that repairs the hole or weakness with a mesh material.
However in cases where there is catastrophic damage to the abdominal wall, or previous hernia repairs have failed, then advanced complex hernia repair techniques may be needed to reconstruct the abdominal wall.
Complex hernia repair with abdominal reconstruction has a number of objectives:
- Repair the hernia defect - which may involve rearranging the abdominal muscles
- Reinforce the abdominal wall with mesh to prevent recurrences
- Recover abdominal wall functionality
- Prevent intraabdominal organs from protruding through the abdominal wall
- Provide a cosmetically-pleasing appearance
