Lymphedema Surgery
What is Lymphedema
Lymphedema is primarily a congenital condition resulting in painful swelling in the arms and/or legs. This happens when the lymph nodes fail to facilitate adequate drainage of lymph fluid from an area of the body Secondary lymphedema however, is the most common type of lymphedema in developed economies and is most commonly caused by cancer treatment.
Lymphedema Surgery
When non-surgical options for treatment prove inadequate, surgical options to treat lymphedema include:
- Lymphatic Bypass – where lymphatic vessels are connected and drained into the body’s venous system
- Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer – lymph nodes are harvested from one part of the body and surgically implanted in the affected area
